What is the ICM model?

ICM stands for the Independent Chip Model; that is the model that defines the monetary value of the chips.

So from what is it independent? In fact, from many factors. ICM does not take into account the level of the game players, the players’ position at the table, the level of blinds, the dynamics of games, etc.

We are interested in the ICM algorithm only in the context of Poker tournament.

What is the FGS model?

FGS (Future Game Simulations) is a model based on the ICM model, which purpose is to overcome some of the well-known disadvantages of ICM, namely to take into account posting of the big blind in the upcoming hands for early position players.

To learn about more the FGS model, read articles:

Currently ICMIZER 2 allows using FGS model with depth 1 through 6.

With FGS 2 it looks 2 hands ahead, with FGS 1 it looks only 1 hand ahead, so it is faster.

The recommended depth setting is number of players at the table minus one, making it FGS2 for 3 players, FGS 3 for 4 players, FGS4 for 5 players. For more players not all FGS depths are available. The recommended setting is at least FGS2 for situations with more than 5 players.

What is the Nash equilibrium?

The Nash equilibrium is a key concept of the game theory. It is a solution concept of a non-cooperative game involving two or more players, in which each player is assumed to know the equilibrium strategies of the other players, and no player has anything to gain by changing only his or her own strategy.

This equilibrium is named in honor of John Nash, who is pretty well-known to everybody by a movie The Beautiful Mind. But actually, John Ford Nash, during those periods when he did not suffer from schizophrenia and delusions of persecution, which were colorfully shown in the movie, developed the theory of zero-sum games. And poker is a special case of it.

What is a Nash equilibrium in poker?

First of all, we have to say that it is almost impossible to reach the Nash equilibrium in poker because the set of choices is so big than even the most modern computers are capable of handling. That's why we talk about the Nash equilibrium only in the simplest poker disciplines, such as hyper-Turbo and heads-up. To simplify the game more, we reduce the solutions ranges to the push-or-fold.

To learn the Nash equilibrium is a great starting point for the beginners. You'll start to understand the typical ranges of the push-or-call and what to do in the typical spots.

This happens before you learn how to build your own ranges for every situation, relying on your game skills and reading your opponents’ ranges. That's why the Nash equilibrium calculator is a very useful tool.

What is a Spin & Go tournament? How do you develop a winning strategy?

The Spin & Go tournaments are well advertised and attract a lot of recreational players.

If we exclude the jackpot of 3600 buy-ins which drops down once per 100,000,000 tournaments, the rake of 5% or 6.2% at higher stakes makes these tournaments attractive for professional poker players.

However, if you wouldn't play an infinite number of Spin & Go tournaments, your rake will be 5% only in theory. In reality, this percentage will be higher if you're unlucky, or lower if you are lucky. You can spend a lot of time, but actual winnings will never match with the theoretical mathematical expectation.

Your advantage is ICMIZER 2, with which you can learn the Spin & Go strategy and improve your game results.

The Analysis of complex the push-or-fold tournament situations

In terms of finding the right push range, different tournament situations can have different complexity.

What could we do to understand, should we push that hand or fold it?

You have to upload the situation in ICMIZER, then assign expected ranges to your opponents, then click the button "Calculate" and find out the answer.

The problem is that the exact prediction of the call range for one of the opponents is impossible. In this prediction, we usually rely on three things: our experience, the view of Nash equilibrium ranges, and good luck.

In the context of this article we call complex those situations where the role of luck in predicting is significantly higher than in typical tournament situations.
